Magnolia – Short Fall

Though there is a derth of happiness here there is also a quiet beauty and that comes from the combination of the clear intonations and the gracious playing all around. Not least the raindrop piano keys that give us something of the Carpenters with a singer that comes close to Karen in her own right. All put together with a style that might be unbecoming for a hard-nosed indie-rock types like me but I really liked it because it felt like we were hearing romance on record for the first time in quite some time. Sophie Noel wrote the song in a cabin in the Yukon so it’s no wonder quiet magic fills the air. Magnolia’s ‘Confleuncer’ EP is out now. KH
