For some reason, and on reflection I put this squarely at the door of Anton Johansen’s music, I felt as if there was sawdust underfoot. ‘Anton, Marionette’ sure does take on an early Bright Eyes quality, singing from deep inside his psyche to deliver a grand array of internal revelations for the rest of us who are less inclined for reaching that far inside. Of course there is a charming quality that is rare and of course we feel compelled to return again to find out what we might have missed in the narrative first time around. There is fire in this Sydney act’s interjections but the flames are doused by a degree of melancholy. I felt like a waltz was order and for that there must have been magic in the music because frankly I hate the filthy effect of sawdust on my new trainers. KH
