Sigur Rós – Untitled #4
If you focus on their primary albums Sigur Rós star has never dipped, in fact recent album ‘Takk’ showed an even more cherishable side. It seems so long ago since their sophomore album ‘Ágætis Byrjun’ beguiled so uniquely. Here was 4 lads from Iceland making the sort of music that could only have been woven from a life spent in an unspoilt environment. The follow up ( ) was full of peaks (and a few troughs to be honest) but at its best it eclipsed its predecessor. Untitled #4 was the centrepiece, a drifting opus with huge floating riffs and Jónsi Birgisson’s choirboy utterances. Sigur Rós occupy a space between childlike innocence and adult heartbreak and when they land a sucker punch you better make sure nobody is around to witness you sniffle. On a visit to Reykjavik we visited a pub where all the girls wore angels wings and swayed to ‘Starálfur’. It was one of life’s sweet moments. KD
