My People Sleeping – Take Anything

Montreal’s My People Sleeping’s final album ‘Feye’ was produced by David Bryant of Godspeed You Black Emperor! Rather than go down the route of least resistance by involving the tools of modernity a decision was made to record the whole thing to analog tape. You can judge for yourself whether the sonic aesthetics justified the hassle on ‘Take Anything’ because all I’ll say is that as songs go it is purely belter. It starts out as if the door to Dracula’s lair has just swung open and with that out pops his mistress the banshee. She appears for all the world like she may have just swallowed something illegal for while she starts out glacial but gloomy it soon becomes obvious that there is some serious mood augmentation going on. Unfortunately My People Sleeping’s only pursuit these days is to play the odd castle in the sky. KD
