Tussle – Night Of The Hunter

You are going to work hard for your kicks this time thanks to San Fran’s Tussle and their deliciously eclectic electronic storyboards. The cover of their latest LP ‘Cream Cuts’ shows an 80’s arcade styled patchwork quilt, which should alert you to their mazy freewheeling experimentation. Clinic are a close contemporary although Tussle probably lean more daringly to the dancefloor than the off-kilter scousers. That may explain their recent tour with Hot Chip, which led to frequent on stage collaborations. ‘Night of the Hunter’ has much to savour with knowing glances back to early acid and a pummelling schedule (reminiscent of the Morel’s Pink Noise Dub remix of the Killers ‘All These Things That I’ve Done’) early on that sheds a cascading piano riff that is as eerie as it is euphoric. The experimental elements gradually take over but this never stops being a challenging and rewarding piece of contemporary dance. KD
