Haven’t heard it mentioned in many places but from this corner it would appear like 2013 is turning out like a great year for emerging indie acts from Ireland. Artists that have pushed the strum to the side and gone gung-ho in pursuit of their own sound. And Dublin band Swords are certainly doing their own thing, creating a curious yet alluring recipe that harks back to new romanticism (Propaganda spring to mind) but theirs is a more restrained approach. Much of the appeal stems from Diane Anglim’s vocals which express untold emotional without ever seeming to lose control. A steady hand that conceals a delicate heart. Swords are currently putting their debut album together with the help of producer Karl Odlum, the result of which will inevitably be a fine confection. KD
